Top of the Table Clash Ends in a Draw

BUFFALO, NY npsl.info (06/15/07) - Queen City FC hosted their first ever match Friday evening when league leaders came to the Johnnie B. Wiley (JBW) Stadium. A quick look at the National Premier League standings has QCFC sitting in fourth on 4 points (1-1-0) and AC Diablos on top of the table with 8 points (2-0-2). The Blues had a massive task on their hand as the Diablos have played the tough Long Island Academy FC to a pair of nil-nil draws in the past couple weeks.

QCFC started off strong, pressuring AC for most of the first half. Rudi Costa and Casey Derkacz were teaming up to terrorize the Diablos defense. Cory Cwiklinski and Ali Montacer were holding down the middle of the park not allowing any movement down the Blues spine. Half-Chances were coming from everywhere for the Blues, however they weren’t able to convert on many of them as the final pass seemed not to be there for most of the evening. During the first half the pressure finally paid off, Derkacz sent a driven cross through the face of the goal to have AC Diablos left back Ed Hatten deflect the ball into his own net resulting in an own goal. Even if the defender hadn’t nipped the ball into his own net, Costa was waiting for the chance himself. The clever interplay between the midfielders, Daum, Montacer, Franjoine, and Cwiklinski left the Diablos midfield reeling. There was some really enjoyable football played in the first stanza. The half saw the scoreline read 1-0 to Queen City.

The second half saw Matt Driver, AC Diablos Manager, change up his tactics and his charges seemed to take heed to what he was saying. The Diablos completely dominated the Blues in the first 20 minutes of the second half with 3 or 4 clear cut chances. Things started to get heated in the second half as Trevor Ianni came in hard in front of the opposing bench sending Driver into a furer calling for the player to be sent off. The Diablos kept asking for cards all match and it became quite tireless to say the least. They should have been booked for asking. The foul turned out to be even more sour as Ed Hatten attoned for his sins by netting the equalizer off a header from the set piece. The Diablos kept up the pressure with Jeremy Jessup making a near post stop to his right and then the Diablos knicked the top of the upper 90 giving the 300+ strong crowd a brief moment of indegistion. QCFC managed to get things straight and the game seemed to open up a bit. Billy Nerkowski came on for Derkacz and should have ended the evening with a hattrick as he unfortunately missed 3 sitters. Sent in alone on the keeper he managed to bury the ball into the keepers stomach and then missed a header. Later on another hard tackle this time from the Diablos on Nerkowski led to some pushing and shoving, Costa sent in a flighted ball that Nerkowski should have done much better with and skipped off the top of his head and out for a corner. Canadian and Marshall product Dana Heimbecker was inserted for Al Franjoine and his speed helped create a couple changes, missing his most promising buzzing a shot that went across the face of goal. The Blues had their chances in the second half, but could not convert leaving the Blues faithful happy, but not fulifilled. It was an entertaining match to say the least and according to the opposition we are the best team they have played in the Northeast thus far. They should know, they’ve played every team already.
