The National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) is the successor of the Men’s Premier Soccer League (MPSL), a regional men’s soccer league that was developed from teams in the western states of California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Idaho. The MPSL was created in conjunction with, and based on, the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL), marking the first time in soccer’s world history that a women’s sports league gave birth to a men’s league.
The 2004 season saw the NPSL double the number of teams in the league. This expansion included teams from Albuquerque, New Mexico; Las Vegas, Nevada; Chico, California; San Diego, California; Santa Rosa, California; Salinas, California; and Sacramento, California. In 2005, the league became truly national with the addition of the Northeast Conference comprised of teams from Atlantic City, NJ; Boston, MA; Buffalo, NY; Long Island, NY; Toms River, NJ to augment the existing Northwest, Southwest, and Midwest Conferences. For the 2008 season, the NPSL projects the addition of a Southeast Division.

The NPSL is sanctioned by the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) as an affiliate of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), the ruling body for soccer in the United States and FIFA, the world’s ruling body for soccer. Each team plays between 10 and 14 matches per season and the teams are comprised of collegiate, current and former national team/pool members, outstanding youth players, and former professional players who have regained their amateur status.
Integrity, Success, and Longevity are the hallmarks of the National Premier Soccer League. The NPSL operates, and is managed, as a team run league - unique among the amateur leagues around this nation. The structure of the league allows each participating team to have one vote on the executive committee. Each team is owned and operated individually. Each team is responsible for maintaining league minimum standards and for raising its own operating cash. The existing team owners, that comprise the league management team, approve all new teams who desire to join the league.
