2008 WPSL ALL-EAST CONFERENCE TEAMS ANNOUNCED Former U.S. WNT Coach Tony DiCicco is Coach of the Year; NE’s Monroe & AC Diablos’ Walker cap stellar seasons
SACRAMENTO, CA (07/25/08) - With the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) regionals playoffs kicking off tonight in Connecticut and Long Island, it’s now time to announce the 2008 All-East First & Second Team selections - as well as conference honorees. The All-Pacific and Big Sky Conference Teams will be announced tomorrow (Sat., July 26th) as their respective playoffs commence on that day, while the All-Midwest & Sunshine teams will be announced on Sunday, July 27th.
On Monday, July 28th, the MYSC Lady Blues (Midwest champion) travel to Brevard County Cocoa Expos (Sunshine champion) as both sides will battle it out for the lone remaining spot in the WPSL Final Four held at Natomas H.S. in Sacramento, CA from Aug. 2-3. But back to the East - tonight, the North Division champ SoccerPlus CT (12-0-0) hosts the Mid Atlantic second-place side Lancaster (8-2-2) at 7:00 p.m. at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium (New Britain, CT) while the Mid Atlantic Division champ Long Island Fury (9-1-2) will take the pitch at 7:30 p.m. at Tully Park (N. Hempstead, NY) against the New England Mutiny (10-2-0).
The SoccerPlus CT Reds will have plenty to shout about prior to the match as their head coach - former U.S. Women’s National team mentor & current U.S. U-20 boss Tony DiCicco - plus four of his players highlight the All-East Teams. DiCicco was named Coach of the Year while Katie Schoepfer, Tiffany Weimer and Manya Makoski were named to the First Team while Niki Cross was awarded Second Team honors.
Their North Division rival in New England have something to be proud of as well, since the WPSL’s leading scorer Mary-Frances Monroe (16 goals, 11 assists) was named East Player of the Year. One name came up again and again when Mid Atlantic coaches were asked about the best goalkeeper in their division, so Atlantic City’s backstop Megan Walker has been awarded Goalkeeper of the Year honors.
Long Island joins SoccerPlus CT with four selections to the All-East Teams - leading scorer Jasmyne Spencer (7 goals) and B.C. standouts Kelly Henderson & Hannah Cerrone were named to the First Team. Fresh off her victorious Nordic Cup experience with the U.S. U-23’s, Lorraine Quinn was awarded Second Team honors.
After that, the Mutiny & A.C. Diablos were the best of the rest with three selections each - Monroe and former East Player of the Year Jenny Maurer were selected First Team while U.S. U-23 Team member & Nordic Cup starter Meghan Schnur was named to the Second Team - while the Diablos can boast about the selections of Walker, Penn State standout Tara Davies (First Team) and U.S. U-18 star Lydia Hastings (Second Team). Lancaster earned two First Team selections in forward Amy Pickard and defender Kirsten Hoffsmith.
