Women's Professional Soccer (WPS)
A Word From The Commissioner

(Continued)- First and foremost, Philly is just a great soccer town – from the area’s avid fan base to the talented players who hail from the region including Carli Lloyd and Nicole Barnhart, to the past connection with the WUSA’s Philadelphia Charge and the current bonds with the WPSL’s Philadelphia Liberty, AC Diablos and CDSA Future teams.

The key to placing an expansion team in Philadelphia, or any market for that matter, is strong ownership that possesses a vision that will help the franchise and league grow and be sustainable for years to come.

In Philadelphia, we’ve found those outstanding and necessary leadership skills in Matt Driver.  Matt’s an accomplished businessperson with a lengthy soccer resume.  Formerly an assistant coach with the MLS New England Revolution, he currently owns three WPSL teams and one National Premier Soccer League team in the Delaware Valley.  Honestly, I could spend all day talking about Matt’s accomplishments…or you could just read the press release!

Also very exciting is Matt’s established relationship with Nick Sakiewicz, CEO & Operating Partner of MLS Philadelphia.  The two are currently exploring ways the two teams will work together, which will hopefully include sharing the new state-of-the-art soccer stadium in Chester.   All in all, a very exciting week for WPS and the city of Philadelphia.

But we have no intention of stopping there.  Women’s soccer is so popular – and people have such faith in WPS – that a number of other ownership groups across the country have expressed interest in hosting a professional team for 2009 or 2010.  Among them…The Bay Area, San Diego, Cary, and Atlanta.  And personally, I’d someday like to see a WPS team in my hometown of Seattle!

Until next time…
